Pasefika Culture in Midwifery Care

Incorporating Pasefika customs in caring for our Pasefika mothers and their families in the Wellington urban area.

About Pasefika Midwifery Services

Fa’atosaga Pasefika Ueligitone

“In New Zealand, Pasefika midwives are underrepresented nationally in our workforce. There are simply not enough Pasefika midwives to care for the growing Pasefika population in Aotearoa.

My passion in midwifery is to be able to connect with clients from a cultural perspective and to help to them navigate the often confusing health system so that they can access services they are entitled to and have equitable care.

I believe it is vital that women and their families understand the maternity system and have a health provider who is relatable, understands Pasefika culture and customs and who looks more like them. Feeling culturally safe is essential to forming a trusting relationship where the  woman can feel open and comfortable to share. This then leads on to being able to help them make their pregnancy experience as positive as possible.”
